Alder

Alder

A name rooted in elemental warmth, Alder celebrates the art of cooking with fire. Established in 2022, the restaurant brings Chef Patrick Kriss of Alo Food Group into the heart of Ace Hotel Toronto as both partner and culinary guardian.

To enter Alder, you descend from the hotel’s soaring lobby into a subterranean room defined by large concrete arches. Here, the design balances texture and light: dark brick floors, sleek woods, clean-lined furniture, and a gleaming copper bar. This thoughtful mix feels both richly curated and unfussy.

At the core of the restaurant is an open hearth and wood-fired grill. Kriss brings his mastery of Mediterranean flavors to plates that blend smoke, flame, and seasonal ingredients with finesse. Think beautifully charred proteins, delicate crudos, handmade pastas, and vegetable-forward dishes that emphasize olive oil over butter. Many dishes reflect a sense of elemental elegance rather than complexity.

Alder has garnered recognition from the Michelin Guide in both 2023 and 2024, a nod to its balanced craft and considered approach.

Day or night, Alder offers a setting that blends approachable hospitality with design-driven calm. It caters equally to groups of friends, quietly confident dates, and hotel guests seeking a meaningful evening. Friendly, warm, and subtly refined, the experience feels like a well-stoked fire built to linger around.
