Jericho Beach Park
Jericho Beach Park
Jericho Beach Park stretches along the northern edge of Vancouver’s west side, where broad grassy fields meet one of the city’s most expansive beaches. The park faces English Bay with unobstructed views across the water toward the North Shore mountains, creating a landscape where ocean, sky, and mountains all feel close at hand.
The beach itself forms a long crescent of sand and driftwood that changes character throughout the day. In the morning, the water tends to sit calm and reflective, while afternoons bring a steady movement of sailboats and paddleboarders crossing the bay. The nearby Jericho Sailing Centre launches kayaks, windsurfers, and small sailboats, filling the horizon with bright sails when the wind picks up.
Behind the beach, open lawns stretch toward the tree line, offering some of the largest uninterrupted green spaces along Vancouver’s waterfront. The combination of beach and meadow creates room for picnics, casual games, and long afternoons watching the light move across the water. Walking paths weave through the park and connect to Vancouver’s larger seawall network, allowing visitors to continue west toward Spanish Banks or east toward Kitsilano Beach.
Jericho also carries layers of history beneath its open landscape. The land has long been part of the traditional territory of the Musqueam Indian Band, and the surrounding shoreline remains culturally significant. In the twentieth century the site later served as a military training area before gradually being transformed into parkland.
The setting feels distinctly coastal. Sea air moves through the grasses, gulls circle above the beach, and the mountains frame the northern horizon. As evening approaches, the sun drops behind the distant shoreline, casting long reflections across the water toward the sand.
Jericho Beach Park stands out for its openness. Few places in Vancouver offer such a wide meeting point between city, ocean, and mountains, all within a landscape designed for lingering rather than rushing through.
